So we had an earthquake this week
Enzo, AJ, and Nonna were in a parking lot when they thought that the car was shaking because they thought a car hit them. Enzo was laughing and cooing from the rocking. Nonna and AJ did not have the same response.

Very First Play Date, and E's Colon
Today, we had a very special visit from Suzanne and her son Steven, who is a few weeks older than Enzo. Steven is Enzo's first older (and more mature) friend. It was a lot of fun. The boys took turns nursing, spitting up, and trouser-burping. And lounging on their Boppy pillows. Thanks for the hot tea and bagel, Suzanne!
...And the results are in -- no pyloric stenosis for Enzo. His esophegus is strong, so there doesn't seem to be a medical reason for his projectile spew and his sore tummy. There wasn't evidence of reflux (because of course he didn't spew when the doctor was looking!), but there was "significant colon gas." Whoah boy. The doctor is hopeful he'll outgrow it in about a month or so... Until then, anti-gas drops, bibs, and burp cloths galore. And warm towels on the tummy, bouncing on the fitball, pacing this hallways, and singing and swinging for about an hour a day. I can live with it, as long as E's okay. Thanks for all your suggestions and remedies!

Day of Beauty at Claire's Ranch
We headed out to Claire and Tim's ranch in Norco for a day of pampering in honor of Josie's birthday. It was Enzo's first time taking in the sights and sounds of the horses and the rural Norco lifestyle. And it was my first time getting my hair cut and colored in a garage after being "taken around back" to get my hair washed with the garden hose. Firsts for both of us. Happy birthday to Auntie Josie!

An Upper GI to Lower our Anxiety
It was much more traumatic for me than him, I think. That's cause I've had one before and know what the barium tastes like. Fortunately, it was time for him to eat anyway, so he took the bottle full of barium like a champ.
Because we received incomplete instructions from the scheduling lady, and he had a snap on his outfit, we had to strip him naked and lay him on a cold table in a freezing cold room. It was the stretching him and pinning him down while he screamed that was particularly difficult. I did get to watch the barium mixture move through Enzo's little body, which was pretty fascinating. And I was glad to have the (what felt like) 50 lb weighted apron taken off after about 20 minutes.
We got through it, though, and am eagerly awaiting the results. Of course, he didn't spit up in front of the doctors or while be x-rayed...

Hitting the Road
Enzo hit the road tonight for his first walk in La Habra. (And after plenty of weeks of "no exercise" and a few weeks of the indoor treadmill, it was my first time spanking the pavement as well.) While I was only prepared for the semi-serious hills around the neighborhood, Jeff had plans to walk down the HUGE hill to check out the new restaurants that just opened up about a mile away. And since I'm smarter than I look, I realized that if you go down a hill, you must come up a hill to return home. And it's a big one. So, I had a salad. And Enzo did great, too. He started his evening fussing way later than expected. Maybe we have a new distraction for him! And it gets mom and dad moving!!

Time to get real
Although these past nine weeks have been amazingly wonderful, it's come time for us to admit that we have a colicky baby. Yes, despite the pics of Enzo grinning from ear to ear, those moments are unfortunately few and far between - and mostly occur between noon and four. The poor little guy has major reflux and the rest of his plumbing doesn't seem to be functioning normally. He spews every time after he eats -- and mostly 2-3 times, projectile style, and seems to have tummy discomfort. Major.
The good news is that his weight is great -- weighing in at 12 lbs, 13 oz at a semi-emergency doctor's appointment on Friday. He's keeping enough food down to be a healthy weight, but his tummy discomfort isn't getting any better. He cries - interspersed with high pitched screaming - for about an hour every evening. We've tried Mylicon, homeopathic anti-gas medicine, warm towel on the tummy, bouncing, dancing, nursing, pacifiers, football holds, etc. etc. My diet can't get any more bland.
Instead of waiting for him to "grow out of it," does anyone have other remedies to recommend? E's substitute doc (during the appointment last week when our doc was out of town) ordered a barium x-ray to ensure there're no problems with his swallow muscles. But I say, if he can't keep a few oz of milk down, how is he supposed to swallow thick and chalky barium?? Are babies supposed to have barium x-rays?? Please post any solutions we can try....
The best potential solution that my mom came up with last night while we were out to dinner was fresh-from-the-oven warm dinner roll pressed against his belly. It semi-worked. Thanks, Ma.

Getting too buff for my jammies
So, after a week of 100+ temps, and having Enzo sleeping in a t-shirt and diaper (and his Swaddle Me cotton blanket, of course!), we attempted to get him back into his jammies since it was cooling down a bit. Uh, no. He's about 3 inches too tall and about 2 inches too wide for his "newborn" nightie. As you can see, E thought this was hilarious. Note the mini jammies being dwarfed by his buffness.

Take-Your-Grandson-To-Work Day
After last week's trip to the dentist, my dentist concluded that my grinding and clenching at night leading to my excrutiating headaches is due to the "stress of being a new mom." Okay... And since these headaches will drive me to drink, I figured I'd better nip this in the bud.
Fortunately, my dad can hook me up. So off we went to Papa's dental laboratory to get a nightguard whipped up. (This is Enzo's second trip to a dentist's office in one week!!) Unfortunately, Enzo likes the dentist about as much as anyone else, so this pic with Papa was taken during the 27 seconds that he wasn't crying.
I also got instructions on how I am allegedly supposed to be "brushing" Enzo's gums daily. Okay... that wasn't in the hospital discharge paperwork. But now that I have the gauze and the instructions on how to do it, there's one more invasive daily procedure that I get to perform on my son. Hooray!
